COFFMAN, JAY D., AND PETER ALLY. Hyperventilation and human calf blood $0~. Am. J. Physiol. 21 I (5): 1255-1260. rg66.-Calf blood flow was measured in normal subjects by venous occlusion plethysmography, and capillary blood flow by the disappearance rate of an intramuscular injection of NaI131 before and during hyperventilation at 30 breaths/min for 3 min. Hyperventilation with room air produced a significant increase in plethysmographic calf blood flow, a decrease in vascular resistance, and an increase in the disappearance rate of NaI i31. Hyperventilation with 5 YO carbon dioxide in oxygen produced no significant change in calf blood flow, vascular resistance, or NaI 131 disappearance rate. After IO mg propranolol was injected intravenously, a significant decrease occurred in calf blood flow but not in vascular resistance; the vasodilatation previously induced by intravenous epinephsine was replaced by vasoconstriction. Propranolol failed to completely block the increase in calf blood flow and decrease in vascular resistance during hyperventilation, although a significant but small attenuation did occur. It is concluded that hyperventilation produces an increase in muscle capillary blood flow which is partially but not entirely mediated by stimulation of beta receptors.

The Effect of Inhalation Anesthesia with Hyperventilation and Total Intravenous Anesthesia on Intracranial Pressure Control in Pediatrics with Craniosynostosis Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background: Intracranial pressure (ICP) control is one of the anesthesiologist challenges in craniosynostosis repair surgery, especially in multiple sutures involvement. The aim of this study was comparing the effect of two anesthesia methods including inhalation with hyperventilation and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on ICP control and surgeon satisfaction in pediatrics with craniosynost...
متن کاملCerebral effects of extended hyperventilation in unanesthetized goats.
Thirty-six adult, male unanesthetized goats were hyperventilated to a PaCO2 level of 16-18 mm Hg for 6 hours. Arterial and sagittal sinus blood and cerebrospinal fluid were analyzed for pH, blood gases, bicarbonate, lactate, and pyruvate before hyperventilation, during hyperventilation, and after the termination of hyperventilation. Total cerebral blood flow, regional brain blood flows, and cer...

1. Twelve healthy subjects received high-voltage pulsed galvanic stimulation (115-475 V d.c.) delivered in separate treatments of 2, 32 and 128 pulses/s for 10 min at the subject's maximum tolerable voltage while calf muscle blood flow was measured by non-invasive Whitney strain-gauge venous occlusion plethysmography. 2. The high-voltage pulsed galvanic stimulation was administered with negativ...

OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of hyperventilation and mental stress on coronary blood flow and symptom production in patients with syndrome X. DESIGN A prospective study. Hyperventilation and mental stress tests were performed on the ward and were repeated in the cardiac catheter laboratory where coronary blood flow velocity was also measured with an intracoronary Doppler catheter in the le...
متن کاملThe blood flow through the calf of the leg during acute occlusion of the femoral artery and vein.
The calf blood flow has been studied in the human subject before and during acute occlusion of the common femoral artery and vein. The results suggest that the concomitant venous occlusion has a detrimental effect on the development of the collateral circulation. O PINION is divided on the effects of concomitant venous ligation on the nutrition of the limb following injury to the main artery.2-...
